“And a little child shall lead them” is the ending of Isaiah 11:6.

In response to the murders on Valentine’s Day, students from Marjory Stoneham Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, have organized the March for Our Lives today in Washington, D.C.

#NeverAgain is trending in social media. Never again should a student die in a classroom by an AK-15. Colleges are announcing that students who are absent from school will not suffer a penalty in their application for missing school to support this event. Teenagers are leading the country in saying the killing must stop now!

In 1994, President Clinton signed the assault weapons ban that prevented the sale of many military-style weapons but Congress did not reauthorize it in 2004, so the ban expired.

Recently, an AR-15 weapon was used in a school in Connecticut (killing 27), a nightclub in Florida (killing 49), a church in Texas (killing 26), an outdoor concert in Las Vegas (killing 58), and a school in Florida (killing 17). People speak about the mental state of the shooters and that if the correct background checks and mental health services were in place, then these murders would’ve been avoided. But again, our political leaders cannot even agree to coordinate background checks.

Politicians say one thing about legislative reforms needed to keep Americans safe, then propose another, and still vote a third way. The current president suggests a solution is to arm teachers in the classroom.

Having taught for decades, I can tell you that you do not want to put an educator in the position of determining the literal life and death of another human being. It’s more than enough for them to worry about if their students ate breakfast, run an anti-bullying classroom, lead fire drills, shelter in place/lockdown drills, evacuation drills ... not to mention imparting the knowledge of their subject matter to their students.

And what of the killing of 26 people during a church service? Should the worship leaders conceal and carry now? Yes, I have plenty of room under my robe but I believe being armed is quite contrary to the message of love I am preaching on Sundays.

As a nation, we need to overcome the attitude we have about gun ownership. No one needs to own an assault rifle. It was created to assault someone!

Yes, I’ve heard the saying, “Guns don’t kill people, people do,” and that more people die in automobile accidents but a car is not built to kill people.

Another argument is that handguns kill way more people than assault rifles. Let’s not muddy the waters. An assault rifle is built to kill with great precision.

It is time for adults to put on their adult pants and have the courage to say, “Enough!” Enough killings with AR-15s! We don’t need to continue billing it as the “America’s Rifle” as the National Rifle Association does.

“And a little child shall lead them” harkens back to Eden and a time of peaceful coexistence. Students are leading us. You may call me idealistic for demanding our nation’s leaders to have the foresight to stop their political one-sidedness and work together to ban military weapons.

AR-15s are built to kill people. Our children are challenging and leading adults in power. You might disagree with their political correctness but it’s biblically correct!
